Yes, porn does make you stupid!

Everybody who is successful knows the power of willpower in the ascent to do anything worth doing. Mahatma Gandhi said ‘Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from indomitable will’. Indeed willpower, and particularly willpower which involves the power to say no to instant gratification has been scientifically proven to create successes out of people. There have been studies which also prove that people who have the ability to defer instant gratification are also happier, on an average.

Now, this secret is not new. It’s been known to the stoic ancients of Greece and even the current self- help community. It has manifested in the form of goal based resolutions, challenges to get out of your comfort zone and also in some extreme stoic communities which endure hardships and delay pleasure to strengthen their will. I want to talk about one of these communities here – the NoFap Organization. I was introduced to this community in 2014 on reddit and many philosophical discussions later, I joined it too.

The 176,325 fapstronauts (yeah, that’s what we’re called) on nofap are from tens of different nations, and from ages 13-60. The primary goal of this whole community is to reclaim our brains from the damage that porn and excessive self-stimulation has caused it. Basically, because of a fake dopamine overload, your brain gets desensitized to the usual motivating fixes that your brain provides for real world survival. So you’re supposed to get a nice but small dopamine hit from your brain to finish a paper, or to finish debugging your android code, or to finish that painting. However, this is ineffective because your brain is used to a much larger dopamine fix now (through masturbation). This means that you start procrastinating more, and are desensitized to the other smaller pleasures in life – a pretty face, cherry blossoms, a funny joke. You would be amazed at the turn from depression to happiness that fapstronauts have following a successful NoFap reboot. There’s a nice video created by Your Brain on Porn to understand this whole situation. It tells us how the whole novelty of online porn (when you jerk off to multiple women, your brain basically thinks he’s having this amazing orgy) is literally making us dumb masturbation machines.

Also this TED talk ‘The Great Porn Experiment’ by the neuroscientist Gary Wilson. Cheggit.

Now some guys differ in the way they do nofap, some go hard mode (no sex as well), some have sex but no porn or masturbation, and some just want to refrain from porn. It’s generally considered good to go hard mode on your first try as it’s actually easier that way to stick to nofap. Personally, I started nofap after reading a couple of books by Napoleon Hill (Outwitting the Devil, think and grow rich) and he spoke extensively about the conservation of sexual energy, and I just wanted to try it out. My first streak lasted for 14 days and the next 130 days. I found a lot of gains in this journey- I was more motivated, I would judge people less, I would feel confident taking social risks (maybe because of the excess testosterone) and my will power was godlike. I was taking cold showers in the freezing cold of a winter and I was totally chill with it (lol pun), because I could just command myself to be chill with it (yeah, strong willpower makes you Aragorn). It is definitely a hard thing to do but the gains are huge.

Probably the best thing that comes with NoFap is the community benefits that one gets. I have a group where men from several different nations talk about this struggle, their work lives, relationships, the best way to gym, sports, programming and so much more. They’re also always there as a support base for when you’re feeling depressed and are in need of a push in life. I’ve got a software engineer in Tuscon helping me with code for my research assignments, I got a guy in UK helping me with workout regimes, and a guy from Brazil telling me about his encounter with Elon Musk. I guess when men endure anything as brothers they become really close – the best example being men at war.

NoFap also gives you some side benefits since your will power is so enhanced. I have a friend who was trying to quit smoking for years. He did it in one go after being successful at nofap for 60 days. Since, he successfully resisted an urge so much larger than that for nicotine, resisting smoking was a piece of cake for him. A lot of young men kill their libido and natural confidence by just fapping it away, making them inept to have good social interactions, and succeed with women. On the other hand. the high testosterone and average dopamine levels of a fapstronaut, helps him immensely with women and men alike.  Another benefit from NoFap is overcoming apathy about the things happening around you – I have experienced this first hand.  You also have a surge in the number of creative ideas that you get per week. This is a personal experience too.

All in all, if you haven’t tried it already – start NoFap. It’s been a life changer for many a man. You’ll have better social interactions, definitely better sex, and more motivation to spend time at work. You’ll have bigger balls to take risks and start your own company. Instead of those chicks on the internet, you’ll start being super attracted to your girlfriend/wife again. You’ll also grow the nerve to go talk to that girl at school.

Go start NoFap, reclaim your manhood again.
